They have restricted themselves to conceptual art, sculpture, painting, photography and video, and have endeavored to create a balance between male and female artists, and between artists who live in Iran and those who work abroad. Kamran Diba was involved as an architect in founding the Museum for Contemporary Art in Tehran, which opened in 1977, and has also helped develop the museum's collection, which is well-stocked with western artists from Pollock to Bacon.
Among younger generation of Iranian artists Mehdi Farhadian is fascinated by the fantasy world of pre-revolution.
He feeds on photos of women in touristic settings.
He often captures an instantaneous pose of a pleasant moment. The image of the man in swim suit although "Banal" and "deja vu" is also a relic of the past, when swim suit nudity was allowed. Although his paintings deal with the nostalgic past, but surprisingly they come across as vibrant and actual as present.
He conjures up a dream world from the pre-revolutionary era, when beautiful women conversed in heavenly gardens in his paintings, which are inspired by photographs.
